“That’s not just me”: Encouraging Minority Participation Using Deceptive Group Decision Visualization

چکیده
Group decision making often leads to putting pressure on minority group members, who might have useful information but find it hard to share them under group pressure. Traditional solutions such as devil’s advocacy, while being effective, are not always practical due to imposing specific processes. This study investigates the effects of increasing saliency of minority’s opinion in visual representation of group decision state, on group decision making process. Our findings suggest that providing manipulated situational awareness through visualizations can hardly affect a small-group face-to-face decision making process and more studies are required to explore opportunities of using manipulated situation awareness.

We model twocandidate elections in which 1) voters are uncertain about candidates' attributes; and 2) candidates can inform voters of their attributes by sending advertisements. We compare political campaigns with truthful advertising to campaigns in which there is a small chance of deceptive advertising. Our theor...

And it was the strangest feeling to be inside Canada that’s English, but inside Quebec that’s French. Inside Montreal or this area in English, and still be a minority inside of a majority.’’ (QEC/...
